What Treatments Are Good For Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – Carrollton, TX

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a painful condition that affects the narrow passageway for nerves and ligaments of your wrist and fingers. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is often caused by pressure on the nerves of the wrist or trauma to the wrists and hands. The pain radiates from the wrist to the first three fingers (often including the ring finger, but very rarely including the little finger), causes numbness and tingling, and can often cause minor and temporary paralysis of the muscles due to pain and strain as well as mild to severe wrist pain. Overuse and excessive repetitive movements of the fingers and wrists are the most common cause for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (as well as blunt trauma, such as a fall).

Many people want to know how they can treat Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. In cases where the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is mild, a person may feel some numbness and tingling, or even a little tightening sensation to the fingers. When you feel this, the best treatment you can do is rest your hands and wrists for a few minutes in a comfortable position that does not put strain or pressure on the wrists. Try doing some flexing and stretching of the fingers and wrists, but do not do them o the point that you feel extra or new pain. Do not crack your knuckles as this can cause more pain (though permanent damage or pain from cracking knuckles has not been associated with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome). Also, a warm compress can also help, as well as Advil or ibuprofen to reduce inflammation.

For those who have severe Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, surgery can often be a remedy for the pain. One surgery severs the small band of muscles around the wrists to reduce the stress, pulling and pressure, which will hopefully stop the pressure and tingling in the fingers and in the palm. The one major risk in this surgery is that permanent loss of feeling can happen. Endoscopic surgery is less risky and more common. In endoscopic surgery, two small incisions are made in the carpal ligament to reduce the loss of movement. This surgery has a very low complication rate and most patients make a full recovery.

For those who want to look into alternative treatments rather than undergo surgery, many people have found that chiropractic services can reduce and significantly alter the effects of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

While Carpal Tunnel Syndrome may be painful, there are resources to alleviate and remove your hand, palm, finger and wrist pain!

Enjoy,
